Golden Retrievers
Best Friend

Jane Nygaard is a golden
retriever's best friend. For years, she's been taking in
unwanted goldens, spaying and neutering them, then placing
them in loving homes. She's saved more than 2000 dogs.
It all started nearly two decades ago. The dogs are all
ages. Many of them are from puppy mills. All are unwanted or
abused.
"They've been hit, stepped on, afraid of a newspaper, put
your shoes on and they're scared," says Jane. "We just spend
a lot of time with 'em and let 'em know everything they do
is okay."
The reward for Jane isn't money. She has colon cancer, and
the pups may be why she's still alive.
"The dogs are keeping me going. If it weren't for them, I'd
say, 'uh forget it.'"
When Jane's hospitalized, the dogs visit. At the sight of
them her blood pressure drops.
And even with chemotherapy weekly, Jane stays focused on her
most loyal friends. A cause Jane believes may be enough to
cure cancer.
"I gotta keep goin', not givng up, or being depressed," says
Jane. "The dogs need me, I have to do this."
It costs one hundred dollars and up to adopt one of Jane's
dogs. That covers the cost of neutering and fostering. If
